Sources: Ethiopian Airlines and Interjet, close to ordering Airbus A220
According to Bloomberg and Reuters, Ethiopian Airlines is close to agreeing a deal with Airbus for 20 A220s worth more than $1.6 billion, while Mexican airline Interjet wants to purchase 12.
The sale of A220s to Ethiopian Airlines should be completed by the end of the year, Chief Executive Officer Tewolde GebreMariam said in an interview at the state-owned airline’s head office in Addis Ababa. “It’s a good airplane. We have been studying it long enough”, Tewolde stated. With a range of 5 hours, the jet is particularly suited to smaller markets that are relatively distant, he said.
Interjet is also looking at Airbus’ A220 and is close to a deal to buy 12 jets to replace its partly grounded fleet of Sukhoi Superjets, industry sources said. Earlier this year, Flightglobal reported that 2/3 of the carrier’s Superjet aircraft were idle because of a lack of spare parts and that the airline planned to withdraw the model from service.
